Firework is a pop song by American singer Katy Perry from her third studio album, Teenage Dream . The song was released as the third single on the album. It was created by Katy Perry, Stargate , Sandy Vee and Ester Dean written by Stargate and Sandy Vee produced .

Perry said Firework was her favorite song on Teenage Dream . Perry explained about the song:
“People are coming back and almost adopting it as their own anthem, and it's hard, I think, to write an anthem that's not cheesy, and I hope that this could be something in that category. I hope this could be one of those things where it's like, 'Yeah, I want to put my fist up and feel proud and feel strong'. But I also don't want to be cheesy, it's a fine line, and I think 'Firework'… would be like the opus or my one song - if I had to pick a song to play - 'cause it has a great beat . But it also has a fantastic message. "

According to Perry, Firework is influenced by Jack Kerouac's novel On the Road.
criticism
The song was one of the tracks on the album that Slant Magazine found some words about . It stated that it at least caused no pain when listening ([…] it's not an actively painful listen […]). The text was characterized as a would-be message ([…] would-be inspirational lyrics […]). The magazine also found that Katy Perry was overwhelmed with the singing, and Leona Lewis would have been better suited ([…] the vocal lines […] are well beyond Perry's capabilities […]). At least the chorus is peppy and would probably work in clubs. About.com's Bill Lamb named Firework one of the album's best songs, and Lamb said of his selection " Firework is a formidable anthem aimed directly at raising self-esteem." ( “Firework” is a towering anthem aimed directly at lifting self esteem. ) Nick Levine of Digital Spy gave the song five out of five stars and described the song as a straightforward hymn to strengthen self-esteem ([…] a straight up self-empowerment anthem [...]).
Music video
The music video for Firework is part of the contract with Deutsche Telekom . Deutsche Telekom held a competition in which fans could win an appearance for the music video for Firework . MTV reported that Perry began filming the music video on September 28, 2010 in Budapest . Directed by Dave Meyers. The official trailer for the music video was released on October 15, 2010. The video appeared on the iTunes Store on November 2, 2010. The video was voted Video of the Year at the MTV Video Music Awards 2011 and has over 1.2 billion views on YouTube (as of June 15, 2020).
In the video you first see Perry stepping onto a terrace. Fireworks start from her chest to accompany the chorus. This is followed by pictures of people overcoming grief, and they too spray fireworks. At the end of the video a crowd is dancing around Perry in a square and one last big fireworks display begins.
Live performances
Perry performed the song live on the Late Show with David Letterman on August 24, 2010. Perry sang the song on The X Factor in the UK on October 17, 2010 , followed by an appearance at the 2010 MTV Europe Music Awards in Madrid on October 7, 2010 November 2010. Perry sang the song on the Paul O'Grady Live Show on November 12, 2010 and at the BBC Radio 1 Teen Awards on November 14, 2010. Other appearances followed at the 2010 American Music Awards . Perry also performed Firework at the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show on November 30, 2010 in New York City . On December 4, 2010, Perry's performance of Firework was broadcast on Willkommen bei Mario Barth . On December 8, 2010, Perry sang an acoustic version of Firework on the Ellen DeGeneres Show . Perry also sang the song on the VH1 Divas 2010 show and ended the event with her performance. On May 1, 2011, Katy Perry sang Firework at the Logie Awards in Australia .

In the United States , Firework debuted on November 6, 2010 at number 57 on the American Billboard Hot 100 . It peaked at number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in just a few weeks , becoming Perry's fourth number one hit in the United States and the third number one hit from Teenage Dream . In total, the song spent four weeks at # 1 on the Hot 100. The song was double-platinum-rated by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for over 2 million units sold in the United States . In May 2011, the song sold over 4.53 million copies in the United States alone.
In Canada , Firework rose to number 51 on the Canadian Hot 100 on November 6, 2010 , reached number 1 on the Canadian charts on December 18, 2010 and became Perry's fourth number one hit. Firework reached number 3 in Australia and was awarded four platinum records for over 280,000 units sold. In the United Kingdom, the song entered the top 5 of the British charts and later reached number 3. The song was also awarded a platinum record here for over 600,000 units sold.

- In the week of January 8, 2011, Firework sold over 500,000 digital copies in one week in the US, setting a record for the second-highest download sales by an artist in one week in the history of the American charts.
