Roar is a song by the American singer Katy Perry from her fourth album Prism . It was released on August 12, 2013 as the first single on the album through Capitol Records . The song was performed by Perry, Bonnie McKee , Dr. Luke , Max Martin and Cirkut written and produced by the latter three. The text is intended to encourage the audience to show strength and stand up for themselves.

After the song was published, allegations of plagiarism were raised. Critics saw a resemblance between Roar and Sara Bareilles ' Brave .
Roar was first sung during the MTV Video Music Awards . Perry closed the event with her appearance under New York's Brooklyn Bridge .
Music video
Filming for the music video began on August 7, 2013 and ended on August 9, 2013. The video was directed by Grady Hall and Mark Kudsi. The location of the shoot was the Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden. Nokia released a two-minute video on September 4, 2013 that provided a look behind the scenes. On September 5th, the official music video was released on YouTube and VEVO . It received over 500 million views within eight months. In July 2015, the video on YouTube cracked the one billion views mark and is one of the most viewed music videos with currently 3 billion views (as of June 2020).
