The southern tragacanth is a perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 5 to 30 centimeters. The stem is prostrate to ascending. The pinnate leaf blades rarely have three, usually four to seven pairs of plumage. The leaflets are narrow-elliptical to lanceolate.

Flowering time is May to June. The flowers are in a squat, more or less one-sided, racemose inflorescence . The hermaphrodite flowers are zygomorphic and five-fold with a double flower envelope . The corolla is yellowish-white with a purple tip , sometimes the flag and wings are purple. The wings are deeply two-lobed at the front or have a marginal edge.

The legume is puffed up and glabrous.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 32 or 48.

Occurrence

In Central Europe, the southern tragacanth is rare in the northern and southern Limestone Alps and in the Central Alps it occurs sporadically on calcareous rock . Overall, it is a very rare plant species in Central Europe. It rises locally in the Alps to altitudes of over 2500 meters. In the Allgäu Alps, it rises up to 2200 meters above sea level. On the Balkan Peninsula, the southern tragacanth is widespread in the Maglić , Durmitor , the Prokletije , the Šar planina and the Pirin .

The southern tragacanth thrives best on loose, stony or marly soils , which should be somewhat calcareous and clayey . It colonizes sparse alpine lawns , rubble heaps and moraines . He is a character type of the Elynetum.

Taxonomy

The first publication took place under the name ( Basionym ) Phaca australis by Carl von Linné . The new combination to Astragalus australis (L.) Lam. was published by Jean Baptiste de Monnet de Lamarck . Another synonym for Astragalus australis (L.) Lam. is Astragalus helveticus (Hartm.) O.Schwarz .
