California Gurls is a pop song by US singer Katy Perry and US rapper Snoop Dogg , which was released from Perry's album Teenage Dream in May 2010 . The piece reached number one on the US charts as Perry's second single .

Origin and background

California Gurls is one of the most famous songs that uses the Millennial Whoop . The piece was written by Katy Perry, Bonnie McKee , Calvin Broadus, Max Martin and Dr. Luke written and directed by Dr. Luke, Max Martin and Benny Blanco produced. In Germany, the song was premiered at the season finale of Germany's Next Topmodel .

Originally the song was called California Girls . At her manager's request, Katy Perry changed the spelling to California Gurls . This is said to have happened in memory of Alex Chilton , a member of the band Big Star , who died in March of that year. The title is an allusion to their song September Gurls .

On August 6, 2010, the New York Post reported a copyright infringement in the song. It is the line "I wish they all could be California Girls" taken over from California Girls of the Beach Boys in 1965. Rondor Music, which holds the rights to the Beach Boys song, asked Perry to name the two authors of the Beach Boys title, Brian Wilson and Mike Love , as co-authors. In addition, the authors should also share in the income. The Beach Boys distanced themselves from this demand and announced that they would not take any legal action.

reception

Music video

Background and concept

The music video for California Gurls was filmed from May 14, 2010 directed by Matthew Cullen. The official video premiere took place on June 6, 2010 on their Facebook page. In an interview with MTV , Perry explained the idea behind the music video: “It has to do with candy and you will see a beach scene. It's definitely something to watch ... it's all perfectly edible. We call it 'Candyfornia' instead of California so it's a different world. It's not, 'Oh, let's go to the beach and have a party and then let's do the music video!' It's more like, 'Let's take California girls to another world!' "

content

In the music video, Perry is part of the game Candyfornia , which is based on poker and other board games . The landscape of the music video is inspired by Alice in Wonderland , Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and the Candy Land board game . The landscape is decorated with cupcakes , ice cream, candy floss and lollipops . Snoop Dogg appears in the music video as the king "Sugar Daddy", who uses the candy to keep many young women (the queens of Candyfornia) captive during the game. When Perry has freed all the women, she takes them to dance on the beach.

After a while, “Sugar Daddy” realizes that the women are free and runs angrily to the beach with an army of gummy bears . Perry defeats this with whipped cream , which she shoots from her breasts. Then "Sugar Daddy" surrenders and throws away his crown; he is no longer in office as King of Candyfornia. The music video ends with a scene in which Snoop Doog is buried up to his neck in the sand by the women and he admires the beauty of the women with a nod; Based on California Girls from the Beach Boys, he wishes that all women were California girls. Various California landmarks and landmarks are also used in the music video, such as the Hollywood Walk of Fame , the Hollywood Sign, and the beaches on California's west coast recreated from candy.
