Alex Chilton
Alex Chilton (born December 28, 1950 in Memphis , Tennessee , † March 17, 2010 in New Orleans , Louisiana ) was an American songwriter , guitarist , singer and producer . He was best known as a member of The Box Tops and Big Star .
Life
As a youthful singer with the Box Tops, he achieved international commercial success in the 1960s with the song The Letter , which was nominated for two Grammys . He has also released on independent labels such as Last Call Records, New Rose , Razor and Tie and Bar / None. Michael Pilz wrote about him: "For many he was a leading figure because he [... after The Letter ...] consistently managed to be ignored by industry and the masses." Karl Bruckmaier wrote: "He wants to be a big star and so on is also the name of his new band, Big Star not Popstar, a British one-man invasion that begins in Memphis, Tennessee and does not go anywhere - except in the hearts of a few thousand fans. "
His compositions have been covered by numerous colleagues, including The Bangles , Jeff Buckley , Garbage , Kristin Hersh , Placebo , Elliott Smith , This Mortal Coil , Yo La Tengo and Teenage Fanclub . The Replacements wrote a song about him, Alex Chilton , which appeared on their 1987 album Pleased to Meet Me . Chilton's other well-known songs and interpretations include Thirteen (with Big Star), and In the Street, which was covered by Cheap Trick in 1999 for the television sitcom The Wild Seventies .
Chilton, who lived in New Orleans, was rushed to the hospital on March 17, 2010 because he complained of health problems. He died the same day, presumably of a heart attack . He left behind his wife and a son.
