Permanent lollipop

A permanent lollipop , lollipop , lollipop (from the English lollipop ), in Austria also Schlecker , in Upper German also Schlotzer , in Swiss Schleckstengel , is a candy on a stick.

description

A permanent lollipop is a larger, either oval, flattened or spherical candy made of sugar mass or chocolate on a stick. This consists of wood , cellulose or plastic , more rarely also of edible material (e.g. chewing gum , coated with plastic). Some permanent lollipops contain chewing gum in the middle, small toys, are designed as air-blowing instruments (whistles) or can stain the tongue. Lollipops come in almost all colors and flavors. Popular fairground attractions are palm-sized permanent lollipops with motifs and sayings , spiral lollipops and similar special shapes.

Of similar construction to the lollipop, the cake pop ( "Kuchenlolli"), in which the stem of a sweet instead a piece of cake is, or the ice lolly . A candy cane , on the other hand, is an elongated piece of candy without its own stem and a lick or lick clam is a piece of candy in a plastic shell.

Meaning of the stem

The stem of the lollipop is an essential characteristic. The Cologne Higher Regional Court accordingly decided in a judgment from 2001 on the following definition of the term "lollipop":

“[...] The stem is a characteristic feature of the lollipop. Without such a stick, it would no longer be a traditional lollipop, but rather an ordinary candy. What is special and fascinating about the lollipop and what has triggered its specific attractiveness for children for generations is precisely the fact that the candy part is linked to a stick. The handle is therefore not a mere handling aid. This is also not necessary for consuming a candy - to which the product 'lollipop' would be reduced if the stick was ignored - since the candy can be easily put in the mouth. In summary, the Senate believes that the lollipop (lolly) is no longer a lollipop without a stick. "

In the GDR , long-term lollipops were referred to as "fruit stick candy".

Market shares

Lollipops are mass-produced by numerous confectionery manufacturers. The international market leader for lollipops is the Spanish company Chupa Chups , which was able to establish itself on the market in the German-speaking countries in the mid-1990s with the slogan “Lick me” and numerous varieties and specialties and made the lollipop popular. In 1995 the company sold around 30 different lollipop items on the German market and Germany was the top-selling of all 140 countries in which Chupa Chups sold lollipops. The market share in Germany was 35 percent and 350 million lollipops were sold annually. In 1994 the company, which was the market leader in lollipops in at least 70 countries, had a worldwide turnover of around half a billion dollars. In 2001 the company's turnover was 414 million euros, in 2008 Chupa-Chups lollipops were sold in over 170 countries around the world, the total number was more than 4 billion lollipops per year. Around 90% of the company's total sales are generated abroad, with Germany still being the country with the highest sales in 2008. However, the company's total sales fell by almost half to EUR 264 million in the mid-2000s, and Chupa Chups was taken over by the Italian confectionery manufacturer Perfetti Van Melle in 2006 .

In 2009 , August Storck was able to increase its own market share of lollipops of the brands “nimm2”, “Campino” and “Schleckies” to 37 percent. Also known in Germany are the cherry lollipops and other products from Küfa-Werk GmbH & Co. KG in Dörentrup .

Derived names

Due to the typical shape of the lollipop, there are some derivatives and derived names:

  • In the United Kingdom and on the English-speaking island of Malta , the school guides are referred to as "Lollipop man" or "Lollipop lady" because they carry a man-high stop sign in the shape of a permanent lollipop.
  • The fifth version of the Android smartphone and tablet operating system released in November 2014 was given the additional designation Lollipop . This continued the tradition that the major versions of the operating system are named after popular sweets.
