Chupa Chups [ tʃupaˈtʃups ] (from Spanish chupar = "lick; suck") is a Spanish lollipop manufacturer that was founded in 1958 by Enric Bernat and is now part of the Italian - Dutch group Perfetti Van Melle .

The head office is in Cornellà de Llobregat in the greater Barcelona area , in Almeda Park WTC2.

history

In the early 1950s, Bernat worked in an apple jam factory. When he later presented his idea of lollipops to his donors, they left him. Bernat took over the company in 1958 and renamed it Chupa Chups. He was selling a striped candy on a wooden stick for one peseta .

Bernat came up with the idea of a candy with a stick when a mother complained that her child got sticky hands from a melting candy and wiped them on his clothes. Bernat found that sweets were not designed to be child-friendly at the time, although children were the main consumers. He therefore also instructed the salespeople to place the new lollipops near the cash register and within reach of children's hands, instead of behind the counter as usual.

Chupa Chups quickly became successful. Within five years, the lollipops were sold in 300,000 stores. After the dictatorship of Francisco Franco ended , the company expanded beyond the borders of Spain. In the 1980s it expanded to the European and American markets and in the 1990s to the Asian and Australian markets. In 1995 a Chupa Chups lollipop was brought to the Mir space station. In 2003, Chupa Chups, with 2000 employees in 170 countries, sold four billion lollipops and achieved a turnover of 500 million euros , 90% of which abroad.

In 1991 Enric Bernat handed over the management of his company to his son Xavier. The subsidiary Smint was founded in 1994.

After a strategic alliance with the Italian-Dutch Perfetti Van Melle Group had existed since 2005 , the Catalan entrepreneurial family Bernat decided in July 2006 to sell the majority stake in Chupa Chups to Perfetti Van Melle for around 400 million euros.

The Chupa Chups logo was designed by the surrealist Salvador Dalí in the late 1960s . The first marketing was the logo with the slogan "És rodó i dura molt, Chupa Chups", which translates from Catalan as "It is round and long-lasting". Later, celebrities like Madonna were paid to advertise. In the 1980s, the anti-smoking slogan “Rauch Chupa Chups” attempted to attract adult consumers because of the falling birth rates.
