Gummy bears (also known as gummy bears or gummy bears ) are fruit gums in the shape of about 1.5 centimeters tall, stylized bears . They are made in different colors and essentially consist of sugar , glucose syrup , water and gelatin , which gives them their rubbery consistency. In addition, they contain colorants , flavorings , acidifiers and coating agents. They are also available in a gelatin-free version.

history

Gummy bears in six different colors and flavors

The gummy bear was invented in 1922 by the Bonn entrepreneur Hans Riegel . His company Haribo brought the so-called "dancing bears", since 1960 Goldbear called for the first time on the market and is still the market leader. The original “dancing bears” were not only larger than today's gummy bears, they were also softer, as gum arabic was used to make them instead of gelatine . Meanwhile, gummy bears are offered in many variations by other manufacturers.

The "Summer Edition" with new flavors

Since 2000 there have been gummy bears that do not use pork rinds in their production. The vegetarian gummy bears, known as kosher or halāl , are primarily intended to open up new sales markets outside of Europe. A gelling agent is used, which is created when glucose syrup is broken down. According to the manufacturer, it is also particularly insensitive to heat.

Other variants are gummy bears based on fruit juice (declared with the addition of “fruit”), which Haribo brought onto the market in 2009. Fruit juice has also been used for coloring since 1989.
