The Palacio de los Deportes ( German  Palace of Sports ) is a multi-purpose hall in the Iztacalco district of the Mexican capital Mexico City on the site of the Ciudad Deportiva Magdalena Mixhuca sports complex . The geodesic dome is made of aluminum and is covered with a copper membrane . It is located a few kilometers south of the airport .

history

The hall was built for the 1968 Summer Olympics . It was inaugurated on October 8th of that year by the Mexican President Gustavo Díaz Ordaz . During the summer games, men's basketball and volleyball tournaments were held in the event arena . The hall was later used from 1994 to 1995 by the Mexico Aztecas from the CBA for basketball games and in 1995 by the Mexico Toros for indoor soccer .

After the games, the arena was mainly used for concerts and shows . Many artists and bands such as Metallica , KISS or Bruce Springsteen as well as the Cirque du Soleil have performed in the arena . In 1976 and 1987 bullfights were also held in the arena .

The hall was also used by the North American basketball league NBA . A total of 16 preseason games have been played in the hall since 1992 . On December 6, 1997, the game of the Houston Rockets against the Dallas Mavericks (108: 106) was the first regular season game played on Mexican soil.
