American Championship 2013

The American Basketball Championship 2015 (officially: Campeonato FIBA Americas 2015 ( English The FIBA Americas Championship 2015 )) was the 17th edition of this tournament and took place from August 31 to September 12, 2015 in the Mexican capital, Mexico City . In addition to the continental championship for the men's national teams of the continental federation FIBA America, the tournament also included qualification for the basketball tournament at the 2016 Olympic Games . Of the ten participating teams, the finalists qualified directly for the Olympic Games and the other semi-finalists as well as the fifth-placed team in the intermediate round qualified for another qualifying tournament right before the Olympics next year. Since in addition to the Olympic host Brazil , the United States , the world champion, had already qualified directly for the Olympic Games, the North American world champions decided not to take part in the continental championships. In contrast to the previous American Championship, in which Mexico was the successor, the Mexican national team was even the continental defending champion at this event. The games were played exclusively in the Palacio des los Desportes .

After the premier winners Mexico at the last tournament, the Venezuelan national team under coach Néstor García was another premier winner. Venezuela was able to leave behind the tournament favorites Canada , Argentina and hosts Mexico in the knockout system of the medal round , who had dominated the tournament in the group games of the preliminary and intermediate rounds. Individually, NBA professional Luis Scola from Argentina was named Most Valuable Player for the fourth time in the last five events , after having been the tournament's top scorer for the third time in the last four events . Parallel to the events at the EuroBasket 2015 , which was taking place at the same time , at which Tony Parker was able to replace the Greek scorer legend of the 1980s Nikos Galis as "All-Time Leading Scorer" , Scola also overtook the Brazilian scorer legend of the 1980s Oscar Schmidt as the most successful Points collector across all events of the American Championships. In addition to the semi-finalists, Puerto Rico's selection reached a starting place for another Olympic qualifying tournament in the following year.

Attendees

The qualification was based on the regional sub-zones of the Continental Association. In addition to the North American teams, the United States, which did not participate, and Canada, the medal winners of the previous Central American championship "Centrobasket" and the South American basketball championship also qualified . If the host of the American Championship is among the semi-finalists of these regional championships or as a North American participant, all semi-finalists are also qualified for the continental championships.

mode

At the tournament, a preliminary round was held in two groups of five teams each as a round-robin tournament. The two worst-placed teams in the preliminary round were then eliminated from the tournament, while the other teams, taking their preliminary round results with them, played an intermediate round as a continuation of the round-robin tournament against the best four teams in the other preliminary round group. The best four teams of this intermediate round played the medals of the continental championships among themselves in the final round in the knockout system . The finalists qualified directly for the Olympic Games, while the participants in third to fifth were invited to the qualifying tournament in July 2016 . If Olympic hosts Brazil, who were disappointedly eliminated after the preliminary round, had been among the finalists, the sixth of the intermediate round would have been eligible to participate in the qualifying tournament the following year.
