American Championship 2015

The American Basketball Championship 2017 (officially: FIBA AmeriCup ) was the 18th edition of this tournament and took place in South America from August 25 to September 3, 2017 , with the medal round of the best four teams being held at the Orfeo Superdomo in Córdoba , Argentina . Based on the 2015 European Championship finals , which were held in various countries , the group matches were previously in Medellín , Colombia , Montevideo , Uruguay, and Bahía Blanca, Argentina .

Due to the change in the competition calendar with regard to the 2019 World Cup finals , for which there will now be a separate World Cup qualifying round , the tournament was no longer a qualifying tournament for global FIBA finals than it was originally introduced in the 1980s. Instead, the continental federation FIBA America now used the tournament as a qualification for the Pan American Games 2019 , for which, in addition to hosts Peru , whose national team is not qualified for the AmeriCup 2017, the seven best national teams of the AmeriCup 2017 are qualified. As a consequence of the change in the competition calendar, the continental finals of FIBA America will also be switched to a four-year cycle, so that the next AmeriCup will not be held until 2021. The made-up word “AmeriCup” has also been introduced in order to create a uniform brand comparable to the name EuroBasket in all languages of the participating countries.

Attendees

When the American Championship still had the character of a qualifying tournament, the basketball association of the United States USA Basketball had waived the participation of its selection team since 2008 because it had already qualified as defending champions for the global finals and there were not enough NBA professionals to participate in the American Championship would have moved. With the new format, as before at the Pan American Games 2015, an A2 or B selection was made up of players from the “ Minor LeagueD-League and foreign professional leagues, which was supervised by Jeff Van Gundy , although it was previously established that the A -Selection for World Cup finals and Olympic Games with NBA professionals, which was previously supervised by Mike Krzyzewski , will be trained by Gregg Popovich in the future .

After ten selection teams had participated in the last tournament, the field was increased to twelve selection teams through the participation of the United States and the temporarily suspended Brazilians.

At the tournament, a preliminary round was held in three groups of four teams each as a round-robin tournament. Only the group winners qualified for the medal round, with the exception that by choosing Córdoba as the final round location, the somewhat absurd sporting stipulation was made that record medal winners Argentina, which in the last nine events were always placed below the top three teams, regardless of his group stage results qualified for the medal round. Therefore, in addition to Argentina, the best-placed team in this preliminary round group, which was held in Bahía Blanca, qualified as the fourth team for the medal round. The respective runners-up or the second-best team in the Argentina group qualified for the next Pan American Games. In the event of a tie in terms of victories and defeats, a direct comparison decided the placements in the group. The medal round was held as a Final Four tournament, with the losers in the semi-finals playing a game for the bronze medals.
