The American Basketball Championship 2005 (officially: Campeonato FIBA ​​Americas 2005 ( English The FIBA ​​Americas Championship 2005 )) is the 12th edition of this tournament and took place from August 24 to September 4, 2005 in the Dominican capital, Santo Domingo . In addition to the continental championship for the men's national teams of the continental federation FIBA ​​America, the tournament also included qualifying for the 2006 World Basketball Championship . At the tournament, a preliminary round was held in two groups of five teams each as a round-robin tournament. The two worst-placed teams in the preliminary round were then eliminated from the tournament, while the other teams, taking their preliminary round results with them, played an intermediate round as a continuation of the round-robin tournament against the best four teams in the other preliminary round group. The best four teams of this intermediate round were qualified for the world championships and played the medals of the continental championships among themselves in the final round in the knockout system .
