Signs for a green route in Hradec Králové
Green route in London

As Green Route (English greenway ) are internationally biking trails referred to special quality requirements. To develop uniform standards for green routes , the European Greenways Association (AEVV-EGWA) was founded, which annually awards a prize for the best green route . The background to this is a decision from 2000 to develop a European Greenway Network with the support of the EU .

The term Green Route is used internationally in different languages: in France, for example, the name is Voies Vertes , in Spain and Mexico Vías Verdes , in Québec Route Verte and in English-speaking countries Greenways . The term avenue cycle path has also become established in North Rhine-Westphalia .

Criteria for Green Routes

The AEVV-EGWA has developed quality criteria for green routes :

  • The cycle paths should be car-free throughout
  • The cycle paths should be accessible to different user groups, such as cyclists, Nordic walkers, inline skaters, families with children
  • Barrier-free access to the bike path
  • Good attachment. Asphalting is not a mandatory quality criterion if it contradicts nature conservation, for example
  • Clear signage
  • Moderate gradient

Environmental and landscape protection

Many green routes run on the routes of former traffic routes, such as former railway lines, historical supply routes along shipping canals, former towing paths or on river embankments and dykes. Since the routes are already in place, use as a cycle path does not represent any further structural intervention in the landscape and nature.

Green routes in German-speaking countries

In the German-speaking countries (especially Germany, Austria, Switzerland) the term greenway or green bike route has hardly established itself so far. However, the designation rail route cycle path , Allen cycle path or RailTrail refers to cycle paths that meet the criteria of green routes . The official bicycle tour planner of the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia enables the display of railway cycle paths and thus of greenways, although the list is not yet complete (as of September 2013). Also in common cycle maps, railway cycle paths are increasingly explicitly shown as such, such as in the BVA cycle map Ruhrgebiet-Ost.
