The Uruguayan national basketball team represents the Republic of Uruguay in international or friendly matches. The Uruguayan national team achieved their greatest successes at the 1952 and 1956 Summer Olympics when they won the bronze medal. In 1930, Uruguay became the first national basketball team in South America to win the first ever American basketball championship in the Uruguayan capital, Montevideo . At world championships one achieved the best result with the first participation with the sixth place 1954, after one withdrew the participation in the first world championship still short term. After the first four World Cups were all held on the South American continent, the 1967 World Cup itself hosted the global finals in Montevideo. But since the 1960s, it has not been possible to follow up on the early successes of the 1950s on a global scale.
