The Torneo de las Américas 1984 ( english The 1984 Tournament of the Americas ) is the second edition of the FIBA Americas Championship took place from 15 to 24 May 1984 at the Brazilian São Paulo instead. The tournament was about qualifying for the basketball tournament at the 1984 Olympic Games . In retrospect, the tournament was included in the order of the American championships and counted as a continental championship for national teams of men of the continental federation FIBA America . Of the nine participating teams in the end, the three medal winners qualified directly for the Olympic Games. The US national team was to host the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles already set automatically for the Olympic tournament and did not participate.
Attendees
There was a regional qualification according to the sub-zones of the continental association. In addition to the two national teams of the North American subzone and hosts Brazil, the four first-placed teams of the Central and South American championships were qualified. The United States as Olympic host and Venezuela did not participate, instead the Dominican Republic was given a starting place.

The tournament was held as a round-robin tournament. The three teams placed first were the medal winners of the tournament and qualified for the 1984 Olympic Games. With the same number of wins, the direct comparison counted for the ranking on the places.
