The Cuban men's national basketball team represents Cuba at international basketball matches. In the 1970s it was one of the best national teams within the world association FIBA and won a bronze medal at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich . Two years later they finished fourth at the 1974 World Championships in Puerto Rico , the only world championship so far held in the Caribbean . Since the 2000s, in contrast to the Cuban women's selection, it fell behind its regional rivals Puerto Rico , Dominican Republic and the US Virgin Islands and has only qualified once for a continental finals of the American basketball championships since 1999 .
