The Torneo de las Américas 1993 ( English The 1993 Tournament of the Americas ) is the sixth edition of the American basketball championship and took place from August 28 to September 5, 1993 in the Puerto Rican capital, San Juan . The tournament was about qualifying for the 1994 Basketball World Cup . In retrospect, the tournament was included in the series of the American Championships and counted as a continental championship for national teams of men of the continental federation FIBA America . Of the ten participating teams, the four participants in the semi-finals qualified directly for the world championships. Since the United States had already qualified as Olympic champions for the World Championships, another team would have the opportunity to qualify if the United States reached the semi-finals. In this case, the game for 5th place decided in the placement round about the last starting place for the world championship.

The two worst-placed teams in the preliminary round were then eliminated from the tournament, while the other teams continued to play in the knockout system . The pairings of the quarter-finals were determined by the placements of the preliminary round. While the four winners of the quarterfinals qualified directly for the world championships and played the medals among themselves, the losers of the quarterfinals played a fifth participant in the world championship, provided the United States reached the semifinals of the medal round. In this case, the winner of the placement round received another starting place at the 1994 World Cup.
