The 1992 Torneo de las Américas 1992 ( English The 1992 Tournament of the Americas ) is the fifth edition of the American basketball championship and took place from June 27 to July 5, 1992 at the Memorial Coliseum in Portland (Oregon) . The tournament was about qualifying for the basketball tournament at the 1992 Olympic Games . In retrospect, the tournament was included in the order of the American championships and counted as a continental championship for national teams of men of the continental federation FIBA America . Of the ten participating teams, the four semi-finalists qualified directly for the Olympic Games. It was the first appearance at an official competition of the so-called " Dream Team ", in which the selection of the United States was for the first time made up exclusively of active NBA professionals except for one player and Magic Johnson, who was otherwise inactive due to an HIV infection . Larry Bird ended his active career after the Olympics. The team was extremely dominant and won, as in the later Olympic tournament, all games with a gap of at least 38 basket points. Like many players on this team individually, the selection itself as a team was later inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame .

Attendees

There was a regional qualification according to the sub-zones of the continental association. In addition to the two national teams of the North American subzone, the four semi-finalists of the Central and South American championships took part.
