The Torneo de las Américas 1980 ( English The 1980 Tournament of the Americas ) is the first edition of the American basketball championship and took place from April 18 to 25, 1980 in the Puerto Rican capital San Juan . The tournament, which was held for the first time, was about qualifying the national teams of the continental association FIBA America, which had been founded five years earlier, for the basketball tournament at the 1980 Olympic Games . In retrospect, the tournament was included in the order of the American championships and counted as the continental championship for national teams of the men of FIBA America. Of the seven participating teams in the end, the three medal winners qualified directly for the Olympic Games. The United States' selection automatically qualified as gold medalists at the 1976 Montreal Olympic Tournament and defending champions and did not participate in the qualifying tournament. A week before the start of the Olympic qualification, the United States Olympic Committee decided to boycott the 1980 Summer Games in Moscow . Until the beginning of the Olympic Games in 1980, all medal winners of the Olympic elimination in the continental association FIBA America joined this boycott, so that ultimately Brazil and Cuba were invited to the Olympic tournament as teams of FIBA America .
Attendees
There was a regional qualification according to the sub-zones of the continental association. In addition to the two national teams of the North American subzone and host Puerto Rico, the medal winners of the South American championships were qualified. From the Central American zone, the top-ranked teams in the basketball competition of the Pan American Games in 1979 took part, with the selection of Panama not taking part in the competition, as did the originally already qualified selection of the United States from the North American zone.
