The 1997 Torneo de las Américas ( English The 1997 Tournament of the Americas ) is the eighth edition of the American basketball championship and took place from August 21st to 31st, 1997 in the Uruguayan capital Montevideo . The tournament was about qualifying for the 1998 World Basketball Championship . In retrospect, the tournament was included in the series of the American Championships and counted as a continental championship for national teams of men of the continental federation FIBA America . Of the ten participating teams, the teams placed in the top four qualified directly for the World Championships. Since the United States had already qualified for the World Championships as Olympic champions and defending champions, another team would have the opportunity to qualify, provided the United States was placed in the top four teams of the intermediate round. In this case, the game for 5th place decided the last starting place for the world championship.
