The 1997 Torneo de las Américas ( English The 1997 Tournament of the Americas ) is the eighth edition of the American basketball championship and took place from August 21st to 31st, 1997 in the Uruguayan capital Montevideo . The tournament was about qualifying for the 1998 World Basketball Championship . In retrospect, the tournament was included in the series of the American Championships and counted as a continental championship for national teams of men of the continental federation FIBA America . Of the ten participating teams, the teams placed in the top four qualified directly for the World Championships. Since the United States had already qualified for the World Championships as Olympic champions and defending champions, another team would have the opportunity to qualify, provided the United States was placed in the top four teams of the intermediate round. In this case, the game for 5th place decided the last starting place for the world championship.
Attendees
Regional qualification according to the sub-zones of the Continental Union. In addition to the two national teams of the North American subzone, the four semi-finalists took part in the Central and South American championships, which also included the host Uruguay as the winner of the 1997 South American basketball championship .

mode
At the tournament, a preliminary round was held in two groups of five teams each as a round-robin tournament. The two worst-placed teams in the preliminary round were then eliminated from the tournament, while the other teams, taking their preliminary round results with them, played an intermediate round as a continuation of the round-robin tournament against the best four teams in the other preliminary round group. With the same number of wins and losses, the direct comparison decided . Subsequently, placement games of the first six teams decided on the final placement. For fifth place, which in all likelihood would be enough for qualifying for the World Cup, there was an additional game between the fifth and sixth placed teams in the intermediate round.
