The Torneo de las Américas 1989 ( English The 1989 Tournament of the Americas ) is the fourth edition of the American basketball championship and took place from June 8th to 18th, 1989 in the Mexican capital Mexico City . The tournament, which had only been played three times previously as a qualification for the respective Olympic Games, was the first time to qualify for a World Cup final, in this case for the 1990 World Basketball Championship . In retrospect, the tournament was included in the series of the American Championships and counted as a continental championship for national teams of men of the continental federation FIBA America . Of the twelve participating teams, the four participants in the semi-finals and the winner of the placement round qualified directly for the world championships. Since Argentina, as the host of the World Cup finals, had already qualified for the World Cup, another team would have the opportunity to qualify if Argentina had reached one of the five qualifying places. In this case, both finalists of the placement round would have qualified.
Attendees
Regional qualification according to the sub-zones of the Continental Union. In addition to the two national teams of the North American sub-zone, the five winners of the Central and South American championships also took part, including host Mexico as a semi-finalist in the 1989 Centrobasket. Paraguay as sixth of the Campeonato Sudamericano 1989 replaced the bronze medalist Uruguay , who did not participate.

At the tournament, a preliminary round was held in two groups of five teams each as a round-robin tournament. The two worst-placed teams in the preliminary round were then eliminated from the tournament, while the other teams continued to play in the knockout system . The pairings of the quarter-finals were determined by the placements of the preliminary round. While the four winners of the quarter-finals were directly qualified for the world championships and played the medals among themselves, the losers of the quarter-finals played a fifth participant in the world championship. In the event that World Cup host Argentina had been among the top five, the loser in the final of the placement round would also have qualified for the 1990 World Cup.
