The Torneo de las Américas 2003 ( English The 2003 Tournament of the Americas ) is the eleventh edition of the American basketball championship and took place from August 20 to 31, 2003 in the Puerto Rican capital, San Juan . The tournament was about qualifying for the basketball tournament at the 2004 Olympic Games . In retrospect, the tournament was included in the order of the American championships and counted as a continental championship for national teams of men of the continental federation FIBA America . Of the ten participating teams, the three medal winners qualified directly for the Olympic Games. All games were played in the Coliseo Roberto Clemente .
Attendees
Regional qualification according to the sub-zones of the Continental Union. In addition to the two national teams of the North American subzone, the four semi-finalists took part in the Central and South American championships, including host Puerto Rico as the winner of the 2003 Centrobasket.

At the tournament, a preliminary round was held in two groups of five teams each as a round-robin tournament. The two worst-placed teams in the preliminary round were then eliminated from the tournament, while the other teams, taking their preliminary round results with them, played an intermediate round as a continuation of the round-robin tournament against the best four teams in the other preliminary round group. The result against the eliminated team from the preliminary round was included in the evaluation, with the same number of wins and losses, the direct comparison decided . The four semi-finalists played the medals in the knockout system and thus also the direct qualification places.

Intermediate round
The games of the intermediate round, which were determined by the four semi-finalists and participants in the final round, took place between August 25 and 28, 2003. The results of the preliminary round are shown in italics.
Final round
The games of the final round took place on August 30 and 31, 2003. The winners of the semi-finals were directly qualified for the Olympic Games and played for the gold medal in the final. The losers of the semi-finals not only played for the bronze medal in the "small final", but also for the last remaining starting place for the Olympics.
