Kiril Alexis Wachsmann Mallner (born November 12, 1984 in Málaga , Andalusia ) is an American - Uruguayan basketball player . After studying in the United States, the German-born Wachsmann played as a professional player in his native Spain, in the second and third highest division in the Liga Española de Baloncesto with a German player pass. In 2012, Wachsmann also took the Uruguayan citizenship , which his father had already had, and became a national player in the Uruguayan national basketball team . From 2013, Wachsmann continued his career in the Uruguaya de Básquetbol league and played for the runner-up Defensor Sporting Club from the capital Montevideo in the 2014/15 season .
Career
Wachsmann grew up in New York City and after graduating from All Hallows High School in the Bronx got a place at Iona College in New Rochelle along with two teammates from his school team, which was also called Gaels . For the Iona Gaels, Wachsmann and his schoolmates played in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) of the NCAA . In his last year of study, Wachsmann won the MAAC championship tournament with the Gaels in 2006 and thus reached the national NCAA finals tournament together with, among others, Steven Burtt jr. and Gary Springer Jr., whose fathers led the Iona Gaels to the final round in 1984. There they lost, however, in the opening encounter after half-time lead against the eventual Final Four participant Tigers of Louisiana State University .
After finishing his studies, Wachsmann began a career as a professional player and signed a contract in his native Spain with Unión Baloncesto from Santa Cruz de La Palma . Because of the foreigner restrictions in the Spanish leagues, the German-born Wachsmann played here with a German player passport, as he was not restricted with a European passport as a result of the Bosman decision . After an eleventh place with the second division club in the 2006/07 season of the LEB , Wachsmann moved for the 2007/08 season to the league competitor on the Canarian neighboring island of Tenerife . After a fifth place in the regular season of the LEB Oro, Tenerife Rural lost the final game in the Final Four for the remaining promotion place against Bruesa GBC . In the following season 2008/09 Tenerife Rural lost again as fifth-placed team in the semi-finals against the club from Melilla .
For the 2009/10 season, Wachsmann went to the third division LEB Plata for the Club Fundación Adepal Alcázar from Alcázar de San Juan on the Spanish mainland. With this club he won the championship of this league and rose to the LEB Oro. In December 2010, Wachsmann was once "Player of the Week" based on his effectiveness , but Alcázar finished penultimate in the table after only ten wins of the season in 34 games at the end of 2011 and lost in the play-downs against CD Maristas. After the immediate relegation of Alcázar, Wachsmann moved to the Melilla club in the North African exclave . After fifth place in the regular season, Melilla again reached the final series, this time played as play-offs, for promotion to the top division ACB , which was lost to Menorca Bàsquet . In the 2011 play-offs, Wachsmann recorded the 1,000th rebound in the LEB divisions, which only four other players had achieved before him. In the following season, Wachsmann was again Player of the Week in November 2012, but his team suffered the same fate as Alcázar two years earlier, when they were bottom of the table after only six wins in 26 games.
Since Wachsmann's father comes from Uruguay, the Uruguayan Association tried to get a game permit for Wachsmann in the Uruguayan national basketball team . After this was finally granted, Wachsmann made his debut for the Celeste at the American Championship 2013 , in which Uruguay failed to win after two preliminary round victories in the intermediate round and they finished seventh. Then Wachsmann moved to the Uruguaya de Básquetbol League , where he played for the Hebraica y Macabi club in the capital, Montevideo . However, the 2012 champions were eliminated in the play-off quarter-finals when they finished sixth. At the South American Championship 2014 Uruguay lost in the medal round in the semifinals against defending champion Argentina and remained medalless after the defeat in the small final against Brazil . With an average of 8.8 rebounds per game, Wachsmann was the second best player of the tournament in this category. In the 2014/15 season, Wachsmann played for Hebraica's local rivals and runner-up Defensor Sporting Club.
