Jeff Van Gundy

Jeffrey William "Jeff" Van Gundy (born January 19, 1962 in Hemet , California ) is a former American basketball coach and current sports reporter . He is currently working as a commentator for the American broadcaster ESPN .

In his coaching career in the US professional league NBA Van Gundy was under contract from 1989 to 2006 with the New York Knicks and the Houston Rockets . With the Knicks he was able to reach the NBA finals in the 1999 season .

His brother Stan Van Gundy was the coach of the Detroit Pistons until May 2018 .

Coaching career

In 1985 Gundy began his coaching career at McQuaid Jesuit High School in Rochester, New York . After engagements at other schools, he became an assistant coach at the New York Knicks on July 28, 1989 under the head coaches Stu Jackson, John MacLeod, Pat Riley and Don Nelson .

On March 8, 1996, Gundy himself became head coach of the New York Knicks. In seven seasons with the franchise , he came to a balance of 248-172 and is only behind Pat Riley in the club's history . In the first six seasons, the Knicks reached the playoffs under him . The greatest success were the NBA Finals in the 1998/99 season , where the team lost to the San Antonio Spurs . On December 8, 2001, he resigned from his post as head coach.

From June 11, 2003 Gundy was for four seasons coach of the Houston Rockets, where he reached a total of 130-116 and in the 2003/04 season and 2004/05 season the playoffs.

Others

Van Gundy was twice an involuntary participant in NBA brawls. In a playoff game of his New York Knicks against the Miami Heat in 1998, he tried to separate a fist fight between Knicks forward Larry Johnson and heat center Alonzo Mourning , but went down, clung to Mourning's leg and was dragged through the hall for several seconds, before Knicks-Forward Charles Oakley pulled him out. 2001 Knicks-Forward Marcus Camby wanted to land a blow against Danny Ferry of the San Antonio Spurs , missed him and instead met his coach Van Gundy.
