Daniel John Willard Ferry (born October 17, 1966 in Baltimore , Maryland ) is a retired American basketball player .
Among other things, the small forward played with the Cavaliers and the San Antonio Spurs .
Career
College days
Danny Ferry played four years at Duke University , where he won several National Player of the Year awards as a senior in 1989 (Naismith, Oscar Robertson and UPI). With Duke, he reached the NCAA Final Four three times (1986, 1988 and 1989). Twice he won the title of MVP of the East Regional Tournament. Ferry still holds Duke's record of 58 points in a game against Miami on December 10, 1988. The school's leaderboards also include: He is fourth-best points collector (2,155), fifth-best rebounder (1,003) and gave the seventh most assists (506th) ). He also played in the fifth most games (143).
In 1989 his jersey number (35) was retired by Duke , so it is no longer given to other players.
NBA
Danny Ferry was selected second by the Los Angeles Clippers in the 1989 NBA Draft after serving with Duke . However, he refused to play for the Clippers. He then initially accepted a contract in the Italian Serie A with Pallacanestro Virtus Roma . Shortly after he went to Italy, the Clippers traded rights and Reggie Williams to the Cleveland Cavaliers on November 16, 1989 . Los Angeles got Ron Harper for this , two first round draft picks (1990 and 1992) and one second round draft pick (1991).
In 1990 Ferry signed a ten-year contract with the Cavaliers, for which he then also played for ten years. He had his best season in 1995/96 when he was able to achieve an average of 13.3 points. Danny has played the most games in Cavaliers history (723). He also tried and hit the second-most three-pointers in the club's history (543 of 1,409 attempts), achieved the fifth-best three-throw rate (38.5 percent), played the sixth most minutes (15,045) and had the seventh-best free throw rate (84.1 percent).
On August 10, 2000, Ferry got a free agent contract with the San Antonio Spurs . He helped the Spurs to the 2002–03 NBA championship . With the title win, Ferry also ended his career as an active athlete.
Managerial career
At first he continued to work for the Spurs. He was Director of Basketball Operations until the title win in San Antonio in the 2004/05 season .
On June 27, 2005, Ferry was signed by the Cleveland Cavaliers as General Manager for five years. Almost five years later, on June 4, 2010, he announced the termination of the contract.
As of June 25, 2012, he was the President of Basketball Operations and General Manager of the Atlanta Hawks . After three years he was released from this task.
