Charles Oakley (born December 18, 1963 in Cleveland , Ohio ) is a retired American basketball player for the Chicago Bulls , New York Knicks , Toronto Raptors , Washington Wizards and Houston Rockets in the NBA . The 2.06 meter tall Oakley played the position of power forward and was for his tough defense work "Oak" ( Oak called).
Career
Oakley was selected in the 1985 NBA draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers in 9th place, but shortly afterwards transferred to the Chicago Bulls . There he kept the back of the young Michael Jordan , with whom he has a close friendship to this day. Oakley established himself as a tough defender and strong rebounder, scoring 13 points and 13 rebounds per game.
After his first year as a professional, he was appointed to the NBA All-Rookie Team . Together with the stars Jordan and the later Scottie Pippen , the Bulls reached the NBA playoffs three times, but always failed early. Since the team with Horace Grant and Oakley had two good power forwards, but no strong center, Oakley was transferred to the New York Knicks in 1989 in exchange for center Bill Cartwright .
In New York, Oakley became the water carrier of center Patrick Ewing and, together with similarly tough players such as Xavier McDaniel , Greg Anthony, Anthony Mason or Charlie Ward, became part of a Knicks team that had twice the Eastern Conference Finals and once the NBA Final (1994) where they lost in seven games against the Houston Rockets . Oakley, who was always good for 11 points and 12 rebounds per game, became a crowd-pleaser with his body-hugging way of defending.
In 1994, after a strong season, Oakley was elected to the All-Star Team and the All-Defense Team of Best Defenders. In 1998, the now 35-year-old Oakley was transferred to the Raptors for Marcus Camby , where he spared Toronto star Vince Carter . In the fall of his career, Oakley played one year each with the Bulls, the Wizards and the Rockets before quitting at the age of 40 after 1,282 games. For the 2010/11 season he was assistant coach with the Charlotte Bobcats , but resigned in December 2011.
Others
Oakley was known for several personal feuds throughout his career. There were brawls with Charles Barkley both on and off the pitch, and one time Tyrone Hill of the Philadelphia 76ers lost $ 54,000 to him in a craps game but refused to pay: Oakley threatened him until Hill paid the sum plus "interest" of another 54,000 US dollars.
Private
Oakley holds a degree in business administration .
