James William "Bill" Cartwright (born July 30, 1957 in Lodi , California ) is a former American basketball player of the New York Knicks , Chicago Bulls and the Seattle SuperSonics in the NBA . The 2.16 meter tall Cartwright played the position of the center and was a member of the Bulls teams that won three NBA titles between 1991 and 1993.
Career
After an impressive college career at the University of San Francisco , where he scored 25 points and 16 rebounds per game, Cartwright was drawn 3rd in the 1979 NBA draft by the Knicks. After his first year of play, he was called to the NBA All-Rookie Team . Cartwright established himself as a good center, who made 20 points and 8 rebounds per game and was elected to the All-Star team in 1980. But then he broke his foot four times over the years, gradually reducing his yield to 10 points and 5 rebounds. After the Knicks Center star had signed Patrick Ewing , the injury-prone Cartwright sat on the bench more and more often.
In 1988 Cartwright was transferred to the Chicago Bulls by superstar Michael Jordan . He reinvented himself as a defensive specialist and kept his back free for the two basket hunters Jordan and Scottie Pippen . Under coach Phil Jackson , the Bulls were three times NBA champions from 1991 to 1993, each time with Cartwright as a regular. In 1994 Cartwright was transferred to the Supersonics, where he played 29 games again at the age of 37 and then ended his playing career.
After his playing career, Cartwright worked as an assistant coach, first with the Bulls under Phil Jackson. He became head coach of the Bulls in 2001, but sacked in 2003 after poor results. Cartwright was an assistant coach at the Phoenix Suns in 2008 . In 2013 he took over the coaching position for the Japanese team Osaka Evessa for the remainder of the 2012/2013 season.
Private life
Cartwright now lives in Lake Forest, Illinois with his wife Sheri and four children: Justin, Jason, James and Kristin.
