The first
pick of the draft, Patrick Ewing
The 1985 NBA Draft took place in New York City on June 18, 1985 . A total of 162 players were selected in seven rounds. In the first position was Patrick Ewing of the New York Knicks selected.
Of the 162 players, 66 came to at least one use in the NBA. Ten players from this draft were invited to at least one All-Star Game . Five players were inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame , including first-player selected Patrick Ewing, as well as Chris Mullin , Karl Malone , Joe Dumars and Arvydas Sabonis . With the later all-star Detlef Schrempf , the player came into the NBA, who later became the first German to reach the NBA finals.
sequence
To determine the order in which the teams can choose players, a draft lottery was held for the first time in 1985 . A coin has been tossed beforehand to determine whether the worst team of the preseason from the east or the west has the first choice. This rule has often led to rumors of deliberately losing games to keep promising players in the past. In 1985, the seven franchises that did not qualify for the playoffs had the same chance of the first seven picks. These were the Golden State Warriors , Indiana Pacers , New York Knicks , Los Angeles Clippers , Seattle SuperSonics , Kansas City Kings, and Atlanta Hawks . The Knicks won the lottery and were given first choice, leading to speculation about manipulation that continues to this day. Patrick Ewing was a very promising player and New York was the most important market for the NBA, but the team was in dire need of reinforcement. From the eighth pick and generally from the second draft round, the order was determined exclusively by the result of the previous season, whereby the worst teams were allowed to select first.
