Career
McDaniel was considered a star in college. In his final year of college for the Wichita State Shockers , he scored 27.4 points and 15.0 rebounds on average, leading the NCAA college league in both categories. In the subsequent NBA draft in 1985 , he was selected by the Seattle SuperSonics in fourth place. He scored 17.1 points and 8.0 rebounds on average and came in second behind Patrick Ewing in the Rookie of the Year election . The following year, McDaniel increased his average to 23.0 points and reached the Western Conference finals with the Sonics. In 1988 he was first invited to the NBA All-Star Game . In the 1988-89 season McDaniel came from the bench and started in 10 of his 82 games, but scored 20.5 points on average. During the 1990-91 season he was transferred to the Phoenix Suns , which he left again at the end of the season and was passed on to the New York Knicks . At the Knicks, McDaniel's physical style of play matched the tough, defensive style of play that coach Pat Riley installed around Patrick Ewing. With New York, McDaniel reached the Eastern Conference final in 1992, where they lost to the Chicago Bulls . However, he left New York and played three years for the Boston Celtics , where he was only used as a role player. After a brief stint in Greece for Iraklis Thessaloniki , he returned to the NBA in 1996 and played for the New Jersey Nets for two years . In 1998 he announced his resignation. During his career, McDaniel scored 15.6 points, 6.1 rebounds 2.0 assists on average.
