Carnival parade 2007

Mashramani (short: Mash) is a carnival festival in Guyana and loosely translated means harvest festival .

For years, the carnival has been celebrated on February 23 (1970), the national holiday, Republic Day. With its largest move in Georgetown, it resembles the one in Trinidad with its colorfully costumed participants, groups, decorated floats and steel bands with their calypso music and soca music .

All ethnic groups with their unique characteristics and cultural diversity take part in the carnival.

The motto for 2016 is: “Celebration of Diversity, Unity and Sovereignty.” The biggest parade this year has been postponed to May as Guyana celebrates its 50th Independence Day on May 26th.
