Terry Porter (born April 8, 1963 in Milwaukee , Wisconsin ) is an American basketball coach and former basketball player who is under contract with the Minnesota Timberwolves as an assistant coach.

Career

High school & college

In his teens, Porter attended South Division High School in his hometown of Milwaukee. In 1981 he began studying at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point , where he completed the full four-year study period. During this time he played in the university's basketball team, the Pointers, took part in three national championship tournaments of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and was twice appointed to the "NAIA First-Team All-American" . In his final college season in 1984, he was named "NAIA Player of the Year" and was named Most Valuable Player of the championship tournament.

Because of his good management, he was appointed to the preliminary round of the Olympic Games, the US Men's Olympic Basketball Team Trials , in 1984 , where, due to many other very good players in the positions of point guards and shooting guards , he did not get into the Olympic team was able to prevail.

After playing in the shooting guard position for three college seasons, he moved to the point guard position for the fourth season, which he held for the remainder of his career.

NBA as a player

In the 1985 NBA Draft , Porter was selected as the 24th  pick in the 1st round by the Portland Trail Blazers , where he spent the first decade of his NBA career. During this time he reached the NBA Finals twice , where he and his team lost to the Detroit Pistons in 1990 and the Chicago Bulls in 1992 . In the intervening 1991 season, the team was eliminated in the Conference Finals of the play-offs against the Los Angeles Lakers . At this peak of his career, he took part in two All-Star Games in 1991 and 1993.

For the 1995/96 season Porter moved as a free agent to the Minnesota Timberwolves with whom he reached the play-offs in the 1996/97 season .

After a one-year contract with the Miami Heat in the 1998/99 season , he signed a three-year contract with the San Antonio Spurs . After the 2000/01 season , he ended his NBA career as a player. He achieved an average of 12.2 points, 3.0 rebounds , 5.6  assists , 1.2  steals per game in 1,274 games  , a total of 15,586 points.

In his playing career he fulfilled all of his contracts and was never traded.

NBA as a coach

Porter spent his first season as a coach in 2002/03 as an assistant with the Sacramento Kings . This was followed by two years as head coach in his hometown at the Milwaukee Bucks , where it was enough for the team to participate in a play-off. From the 2006/07 season he strengthened the Detroit Pistons coaching staff as an assistant coach .

In 2008 the Phoenix Suns signed him , so he got his second job as head coach of an NBA franchise . After 51 games, he was fired by the Suns and replaced by his assistant coach Alvin Gentry .

Since 2011 Porter has been part of the coaching staff under Rick Adelman for the Minnesota Timberwolves . When Adelman was absent in the 2012/13 season due to family issues, Porter replaced him as the team's head coach.

  • All-time leader in assists for the Portland Trail Blazers with 5,319 assists
  • 2nd place in all-time statistics for the Portland Trail Blazers in points with 11,330, game minutes with 23,978 and in steals with 1,182
  • 12th place as NBA all-time assistant with 7,160 assists

Honors

  • on December 16, 2008, Porter's jersey number 30 was withdrawn from the Portland Trail Blazers and has not been given to new players since

Life & private

Terry Porter is married to his wife Susie and has three children. He is the founder of the Milwaukee Scholars Fund , which supports financially disadvantaged students. In addition to basketball, Porter is an avid golfer.

Porter returned to university and received his degree in communications in 1993 with a major in television and radio.

Porter participated in the 1992 recording of a "Fightsong" sung by Dan Reed ( Dan Reed Network ) for the Portland Trail Blazers, entitled Bust a Bucket. The song was only offered on cassette in the Portland area and sold over 30,000 copies.
