The Buzay Monastery (Buzaium) is a former Cistercian abbey in the commune of Rouans in the Loire-Atlantique department , Pays de la Loire region , in France . It is located around 30 km west of Nantes on the south bank of the Loire in the Pays de Retz .
history
The monastery was opened in 1135 and again in 1144 due to a lack of support at the request of Ermengarde of Anjou, Duchess of Brittany, after Bernhard von Clairvaux intervened with her son, Duke Conan III. Brittany, founded and grew rapidly. It drained the surrounding moors and built the canal between Messon and the Loire . The two most important granges were Buzon and Villeneuve; The latter later became an independent abbey. The monastery owned salt marshes on the former island of Bouin . Daughter-ups were monastery Vieuville , Monastery Villeneuve (1202), Monastery Prières (1251) and probably the later monastery La Blanche (Noirmoutier) , which initially was built on a small island. The church and cloister were restored in 1755. It was dissolved in the French Revolution and destroyed by insurgents from the Vendée in 1793 . The Louis XV style altar . came to the church of Paimbœuf . Various other pieces of equipment came to other churches. The monastery grounds are now an agricultural property.
Buildings and plant
An approximately 25 m high tower, which was renovated towards the end of the 18th century, and various pieces of wall have been preserved from the monastery.
