- December 1 : Henry I , King of England and Duke of Normandy, dies of food poisoning without a legitimate male successor. His daughter Maud , whom he had the barons appoint as his successor, is not present at his deathbed, but is in Anjou at the time . This fact makes use of Count Stephan von Blois , whose mother Adela was the sister of the late king and daughter William the Conqueror . He went to Winchester , where, with the help of his younger brother Heinrich von Blois , who was bishop there , he secured the castle, the state treasure and soon the support of important prelates . He finds further support from some nobles, bishops and the citizens of London, who see the election of a king as their old right. On December 22nd, Stephan is crowned by Archbishop Wilhelm von Corbeil . However, since Maud is unwilling to give up her right to the throne, a long civil war ensues .
