Hermann IV (Baden)

Margrave Hermann IV of Baden (* around 1135 ; he is first mentioned with his father in 1152; † September 13, 1190 near Antioch on the Orontes ), was titular Margrave of Verona and Margrave of Baden since 1160.

Life

Furthermore, he held count and bailiff rights in Breisgau and in Ortenau . He is the son of Hermann III, Margrave of Baden and Bertha . Hermann IV was married since about 1162 to Bertha († February 24, 1169), daughter of a Count Palatine of Tübingen .

Together with Emperor Friedrich I Barbarossa, he took part in the siege and destruction of Milan . In the years 1176 to 1178 he undertook campaigns with the emperor in Italy and took part in the Battle of Legnano in 1176 . In 1183 he was the guarantor of the Peace of Constance , in which the Lombard cities received their independence.

Hermann IV took part in the Third Crusade at the emperor's side . He died of the plague in 1190 in the Holy Land near the city of Antioch .
