Richard Fester (historian)

Richard Fester (born September 20, 1860 in Frankfurt am Main , † January 5, 1945 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen ) was a German historian .

Life

Fester had studied at the universities in Munich , Berlin and Strasbourg . In 1886 he was promoted to Dr. phil. PhD. In 1893 he completed his habilitation at the University of Munich on the subject of "The armored estates and the Reich War Constitution 1681–1697" and then accepted a number of calls to various German universities. In 1908 he became a full professor at the University of Halle (Saale) . From 1917 to 1918 he was a member of the nationalist German Fatherland Party . In 1925 Fester caused a general sensation with his report in the Munich stab in the back trial , in which he accused the social democrats of treason. In 1926 Fester retired. Since 1931 he was a full member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .

During the National Socialist era , he worked in the anti-Semitic Reich Institute for the History of the New Germany , was a member of the institute's advisory board and made a name for itself with anti-Semitic publications, for example with his work Das Judentum als “Ferment der National Dekomposition” (1940) or Das Judaism as a decomposing element of peoples (1941).

post war period

After the end of World War II , his writings, which were created during the Nazi era, were published in 1946, Das Judentum als Zersetzungelement der Völker (Hanseatische Verlagsanstalt, Hamburg 1941) and The Political Struggles for Peace 1916–1918 and Deutschtum (Lehmann, Munich 1938) in the SBZ included in the list of literature to be sorted out, as well as in 1947 Friedrich Wilhelm I, Friedrich the Great and the beginnings of the German state sentiment (Schaffstein, Cologne 1942). In 1953, the GDR also included The International 1914-1919 (Niemeyer, Halle 1919) on the list.
