The Villeneuve Monastery (Villa Nova) is a former Cistercian monk abbey in the commune of Les Sorinières in the Loire-Atlantique department , Pays de la Loire , in France . It is located around 9 km south of Nantes on the right bank of the Ognon .

history

The monastery was founded in 1201 by Constance , the Duchess of Brittany, who was buried there in September 1201 in the oratory of the monastery, and was settled by monks from Buzay Monastery . So it belonged to the filiation of the Clairvaux Primary Abbey . It was not until November 1224 that the monastery was consecrated by the Bishop of Nantes . In the 15th century the abbey reached the height of its importance. The abbey was partially destroyed in the French Revolution and the wars that followed in the Vendée . The guest wing from the 18th century, which was restored in 1977, serves as a quality hotel.

Buildings and plant

Remains of the foreign chapel, the cellar under the refectory and the converse wing from the 13th century have been preserved.
