The Prières Monastery (Notre-Dame de Prières; de Precibus) is a former Cistercian abbey in the commune of Billiers in the Morbihan department , Brittany region , in France . It is located around 28 km southeast of Vannes near the coast and the mouth of the Vilaine River .
history
The monastery was founded and richly endowed in 1251 by Duke John I of Brittany. The founding convention came from Buzay Monastery . Thus the monastery belonged to the filiation of the Clairvaux Primary Abbey . The salt pans of La Guérande belonged to the temporalia of the monastery. The abbey was rebuilt in the 17th century. During the French Revolution , the monastery was dissolved and then turned into barracks. When it came into private hands in 1801, only the demolition of most of the complex remained. The remaining parts are used by a rehabilitation center.
Buildings and plant
Of the church, which was rebuilt in the 18th century, only the tower and a wing of the transept with the remains of the graves of Duke John I and Isabella of Castile remained, which was set up as a chapel. The guest house from the 18th century, the communes and the monastery wall from 1699 have also been preserved.
