John I (Brittany)
Johann I von Dreux (* 1217 in the Château de l'Isle , Marzan , today's Morbihan department ; † October 8, 1286 ), known as the Red ( le Roux ) because of the color of his beard, was Count of Penthièvre and Duke of Brittany .
His father was Peter Mauclerc († 1250), son of Count Robert II of Dreux . His mother was his wife Alix von Thouars († 1221), granddaughter of Duke Conan IV of Brittany .
When his mother died in 1221, he inherited the Duchy of Brittany from her. Since he was still a minor, he was under the reign of his father until 1237. He was also Earl of Richmond since 1221 . This county was given to him in 1235 by the English King Henry III. withdrawn from England because his father, loyal to the French king, refused to pay homage to Richmond as feudal lord. Henry III. then gave this title to Peter II of Savoy in 1241 . After Peter II died in 1268, King Heinrich III. the county of Richmond returned to John I. Johann immediately passed the county on to his son Johann II.
Together with Johann II he took part in the Seventh Crusade under King Ludwig IX in 1270 . part of France . After his expedition failed before Tunis , John I returned to his duchy, while his son continued the crusade in the army of the English Crown Prince Edward (I) to the Holy Land .
He died in 1286 and was buried in the Prières monastery , which he founded in 1251.

In 1236 he married Blanca von Champagne, daughter of Theobalds , King of Navarre and Count of Champagne, with whom he had the following children:
