John I (Blois)

John I of Châtillon (French. Jean I de Châtillon , † June 28, 1279 ?) Was Count of Blois , Dunois and Chartres , Lord of Avesnes and Guise .

He was the eldest son of Hugo I of Châtillon , Count of Saint-Pol , and Maria of Avesnes , Countess of Blois.

When his mother died in 1241, he inherited their counties Blois and Dunois, which he may not rule until his father's death around 1246. When his father died, the county of Saint-Pol went to John's brother Guido II , and the rule of Châtillon to his brother Walter IV.

When his grandfather Walter II of Avesnes died in 1245, he also inherited his lords of Avesnes and Guise.

From his maternal grand cousin, Mathilde von Amboise , he inherited the county of Chartes after the death of her husband Johann II von Soissons around 1270.

Marriage and offspring

He married Alix von Bretagne (* June 6, 1243, † August 2, 1288), a daughter of Duke Johann I von Dreux . The marriage contract was signed on December 11, 1254.

Johann and Alix had only one daughter: Johanna († 1292), who inherited her father's property, married Peter of France , but had no surviving descendants. The county of Chartres sold them to the French king in 1286; Blois and Dunois went to Guidos II's son Hugo VI after their death . from Châtillon .
