John II (Soissons)

John of Nesle , called " the stutterer " (le Bègue) († 1270 / 72 ) was (as John II. Of Soissons ) Count of Soissons , lord of Amboise and by marriage Count of Chartres from the house Nesle . He was the son of Raoul I. de Nesle († 1235), Count of Soissons, and his second wife, Yolande.

He is not to be confused with his cousin John II of Nesle , Lord of Nesle , Burgrave of Bruges .

Life

In 1230 Johann supported the regent Blanka of Castile in the fight against Peter Mauclerc . The following year he got into a dispute over property rights with the church superiors of Soissons . After he had captured several prelates , it was only under pressure from King Louis IX. and the mediation of the Archbishop of Reims an agreement will be reached. In 1242 Johann supported the king in the fight against Hugo X. von Lusignan and King Heinrich III. of England .

He also accompanied the king on the Sixth Crusade (1248-1250) to Egypt , where he distinguished himself in the battle of al-Mansura on February 8, 1250. During the fight, Johann is said to have called out to his cousin by marriage, Jean de Joinville , that they would talk about this day in their wives' apartments. In April 1250 he was also taken into captivity by the Mameluks , but was soon released again, after which he then traveled back home.

In 1265 Johann moved to Italy with Prince Charles of Anjou to conquer the Kingdom of Sicily . Together with Guy de Montfort , he led Beatrix's escort from Provence to Rome . The following year he fought in the victorious battle of Benevento .

In 1270 Johann took part in the Seventh Crusade to Tunis , where King Louis IX. died. Johann also died shortly after his return home.

Marriage and offspring

In his first marriage Johann was married to Marie († around 1241), the heir to Roger de Chimay. Her son was:

His second wife was Mathilde d'Amboise († 1256), daughter of Sulpice III. d'Amboise and the Isabella of Blois . She was Countess of Chartres through her mother.
