Walter II of Avesnes

Walter II of Avesnes ( Gautier II d'Avesnes ) (* around 1170; † 1245/46) was a French nobleman from the House of Avesnes . He was lord of Avesnes , Leuze , Condé and Guise , moreover by marriage the Count of Blois and Chartres .

Life

He was the son of Jacob von Avesnes and Adele von Guise.

He fought on the French side in the Battle of Bouvines in 1214 and then took part in the Fifth Crusade . In the Holy Land he was captured and freed by Knights Templar , whom he then helped build the Château Pèlerin in 1218 .

After he returned to Guise, he had the castle modernized. He also built a castle in Englancourt to monitor the road to Hainaut , and in 1226 bought the Bohain estate . In the same year he accompanied King Louis VIII on the Albigensian Crusade and fought at the siege of Avignon .

When Walter died in 1245 or 1246, the son of his eldest daughter Marie, Johann von Châtillon , came into his inheritance.

He married Margaret of Blois (* 1170, † 1230), Countess of Blois and Chartres , daughter of Count Theobald V and Alix of France .
