Condé-en-Brie is a French commune with 685 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Aisne department in the region of Hauts-de-France ; it belongs to the arrondissement of Château-Thierry and the canton of Essômes-sur-Marne .
geography
The municipality of Condé-en-Brie is located on the Surmelin , a tributary of the Marne , about 14 kilometers southeast of Château-Thierry in the Brie countryside .
history
Condé-en-Brie is an old Gallo-Roman settlement. The name means "confluent", as several valleys meet here: Surmelin, Dhuys and Verdonnelle. The castle was built on the ruins of a Gallo-Roman villa. Condé-en-Brie was a dominion of the Montmiral, the Coucy, the Counts of Bar , the Counts of Saint-Pol , then the House of Bourbon-Vendôme . The place gave the Principality of Condé its name.
From 1801 to 2015, the municipality was the capital of the canton of Condé-en-Brie .
