history
Until 2006 the name of the community was Charly .
The place is probably of Roman origin. This is indicated by archaeological excavations. Karl Martell is said to have had a farm here, so that is where the name comes from. The place is fortified from the 9th century. Charles the Bald transferred control of Charly and the lands to the Notre-Dame Abbey of Soissons. This rule lasted until the French Revolution. In 1652 Cardinal Mazarin suffered a defeat against the Huguenots at the gates of the village .
During the First World War, there were violent conflicts here in the first Battle of the Marne in 1914. Under Alexander von Kluck , the first army of the German Empire initially occupied Charly, only to be driven out of the place a short time later by the British expeditionary forces.
From 1803 to 2015 the municipality was the main town (French: chef-lieu ) of the canton of Charly-sur-Marne .
