Avesnes-sur-Helpe (NDL .: "Avenne aan de Helpe") is a French commune in the Nord in the region of Hauts-de-France . It is the administrative seat of the arrondissement of Avesnes-sur-Helpe and the canton of Avesnes-sur-Helpe .

After Avesnes-sur-Helpe, the area is named Avesnois , which is characterized by a hilly landscape with orchards and small villages. The Avesnois is drained by the Helpe Majeure . Avesnes-sur-Helpe is on the left bank of the river.

With 4,495 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Avesnes-sur-Helpe is one of the medium-sized communities in the Nord department. In 1968 the population reached its highest level to date with 6414. After that, the population decreased. The population density is very high.

history
Avesnes-sur-Helpe was founded in the 11th century by Wédric Le Barbu and his son Thierry, who also built the first fortifications. They formed their own rule in Hainaut , but changed hands several times and came to Burgundy in 1433 . After the death of Charles the Bold , the place was in 1477 by King Ludwig XI. conquered and destroyed, however, came to the Habsburgs . In 1556 Avesnes came with the Hainaut from the Austrian to the Spanish Habsburgs and was ceded to France in 1659 in the Peace of the Pyrenees . Vauban had the city re-fortified on the orders of Louis XIV .
In October 1793, Avesnes was the site of Jourdan and Carnot during the Battle of Wattignies . On June 21, 1815, the city was shelled by the Prussians, and the main powder magazine blew up when they were first thrown. the city had to surrender a few hours later.
At the end of the First World War , Hindenburg had his headquarters in Avesnes from March to September 1918. On June 15, Kaiser Wilhelm II took the troop parade on the Grand'Place.
