Fourmies, streetscape

Fourmies is a French municipality with 11,727 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in Nord in the region of Hauts-de-France . The inhabitants of the municipality are called Fourmisiens . Fourmies has been the capital of the canton of the same name since 2015 , previously it belonged to the canton of Trélon .

Geographical location

The municipality is located in the Thiérache , around 100 kilometers from Lille and 175 kilometers from Paris . In the surroundings of Fourmies there are forests and ponds. The city is crossed by the Helpe Mineure River.

history

Roman coins were discovered in Fourmies. In the 11th century the place was first mentioned under the name Formeias , which probably indicates the marshland in the valley of the Helpe Mineure river . In the 12th century the place was mentioned as Formies , Furmies , Formies , Formiis and Fourmies . It belonged to the property of the House of Avesnes and the Abbey of Liessies .

In the 16th century in the area of ​​Fourmies began to work metal and form glass; In the 17th century, glassworks settled permanently. Textile processing, which has been based in Fourmies since the Middle Ages, experienced an upswing in the 18th and 19th centuries. In 1828 the first wool spinning mill to work with a steam engine was opened there and Fourmies became a center of wool spinning.

On May 1, 1891, during the May Day rally of workers in the church square , the military fired into the crowd, killing nine people and wounding over thirty. This event became known as the Fusillade de Fourmies and Fourmies was nicknamed Fourmies la Rouge .

During the First World War , the Germans occupied Fourmies and destroyed the local industry. After the World War, this, together with the decline in the importance of traditional industries, led to an economic decline in the community.

politics

In the past few decades, the mayor of the municipality was usually provided by the political left. Fernand Pecheux ( PCF ) headed Mairie from 1977 to 1995, and Alain Berteaux (PCF) from 1995 to 2001. Only from 2001 to 2008, Martine Roux, a right-wing candidate, was able to prevail until Berteaux was re-elected in the 2008 elections.

Every year since 1928 the one-day race Grand Prix de Fourmies has been held at Fourmies in September .
