Thiérache

history

As a border region, especially in the 16th and 17th centuries during the Eighty Years' War , the area repeatedly suffered from the incursion of marauding mercenary troops. During this time, the medieval churches in numerous villages were provided with defense towers and shelters under the roof and converted into fortified churches for the village population .
