Battles of Saint-Juvin

In September 1792 the French Revolutionary Army under Dumouriez was driven back by the Prussians and Austrians under the command of the Duke of Braunschweig to behind Verdun (this defeat triggered the so-called September murders in Paris ) and finally brought to Saint-Juvin. There were skirmishes for days . However, the royalists missed the opportunity to attack, and Dumuriez, in a masterful retreat , managed to move west with all his troops on the night of September 14th and to entrench himself not far from Sainte-Menehould . There a week later the cannonade of Valmy put an end to all offensive efforts of the ancien regime, Paris for Louis XVI. retake.
