Personalities

  • Arthur Rimbaud lived in the Roche district. His mother, Vitalie Rimbaud, ran the family's farm here. The presence of her maternal family, Cuif, has been documented as early as the 16th century. Rimbaud wrote some of his works here, including A Time in Hell (Une Saison en enfer) and The Drunken Ship (Le bateau ivre) right near the local wash house, where he liked to stay. A few months before his death in late 1891, he spent a few weeks in Roche as a seriously ill patient after cancer surgery.

From the courtyard of the Cuif, which was one of the largest in the village, only part of the wall can be seen today. The property was inherited from Rimbaud's mother, Vitalie Cuif, to the poet's sister, Isabelle, and her husband, Paterne Berrichon. Paul Claudel mentions this in one of his diaries in 1912. Finally, during the First World War, the farm was requisitioned by German troops who established the headquarters there. When the German occupiers gave up the farm on October 12, 1918, they blew it up. Opposite the house, which is now called the Rimbaud House, along the route départementale , a small part of the wall of the courtyard has been preserved. Two stone pillars mark the entrance to the old Cuif orchard and a signpost the way to the public wash house. Roche is on the Rimbaud-Verlaine route of the Committee for Tourism of the Ardennes ( Comité Départemental du Tourisme des Ardennes ).
