Ballay is a French commune with 289 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Ardennes department in the Grand Est region . It belongs to the Arrondissement of Vouziers , the Canton of Vouziers and the Argonne Ardennaise municipality .

geography

Three quarters of the municipality is based on Albian soil. This soil gave the wine grown here until the beginning of the 20th century a special bouquet. The municipality is located about six kilometers northeast of the canton capital Vouziers and about 50 kilometers south of the prefecture Charleville-Mézières . Ballay is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Vandy in the north-west, Quatre-Champs in the north, Toges and Boult-aux-Bois in the east, La Croix-aux-Bois in the south-east and Vouziers in the south and west.

history

The previously independent communities Clairefontaine and Landèves were incorporated into Ballay between late 1790 and early 1791. During the First World War , the village was occupied by German troops in September 1914. At the end of the war, Ballay was 70 percent destroyed.
