Life

After graduating from high school in 1987 at the state-integrated comprehensive school in Kaiserslautern, Mörsch studied fine arts between 1989 and 1994 at the comprehensive university in Kassel and was awarded a scholarship to the Facultad de Bellas Artes at the Universidad de Salamanca in 1992/93 . She then completed a post-graduate course at the UdK Berlin at the Institute for Art in Context until 1998 and a post-graduate course in "Cultural Studies Gender Studies" at the Carl von Ossietzky University in Oldenburg from 2001 to 2003 .

In 2003 she became professor for material culture and its didactics at the seminar material and visual culture of the "Institute for Cultural Studies Art-Textile-Media" at the Carl von Ossietzky University. She also carried out research for the Lower Saxony State Association of Art Schools and was a scientific companion for art education at documenta 12 in 2006/2007 . In 2008 she moved to the Zurich University of the Arts and took over the management of the Institute for Art Education.

Mörsch has been a professor of art didactics for teaching at the Mainz Art Academy since 2019.

Research priorities

Mörsch has been working as a freelancer since 1994 and works on projects at the interface between culture, education and research. Her research and teaching are particularly dedicated to concepts and practices of art education from a queer-feminist, post-colonial and discrimination-critical perspective.

In her book Teilhabeorientierte Kulturvermittlung: Discourses and Concepts for a Reorientation of Publicly Funded Cultural Life, published in 2016 by transcript Verlag, Birgit Mandel writes about Carmen Mörsch's practice of critical art mediation as she introduced it to the public debate at documenta 12. There a distinction is made between affirmative, reproductive, deconstructive and transformative approaches in art mediation and the institution is made visible as an actor and possible intentions are questioned. She brought questions of intersectionality and participation into the discussion and presented a broad understanding of current mediation with her standard work “Time for Mediation”. Ute Pinkert , Professor of Theater Education at the Berlin University of the Arts, writes in 2016 about the practice as represented by Carmen Mörsch:

"If, in relation to Carmen Mörsch, art mediation is understood as a practice that is about 'inviting third parties to use art and its institutions for educational processes: analyzing and questioning them, deconstructing them and changing them if necessary' (cf. . Mörsch 2009: 9), a criterion becomes visible with the help of which art mediation can be distinguished from other fields of work in art education. This criterion would be the explicit reference of this practice to the institutions of art. "
